Numbers 17-18, Psalm 55, Isaiah 7, James 1

Numbers 17-18

God proved His choice of Aaron by taking something dead, a dried piece of wood, and causing it to bear fruit.  All those He has chosen experience a similar activity in their lives.  He takes those who are dead in their trespasses and sin and makes them alive bearing the fruit of repentance.

What caused you to realize you were undone?  How did God reveal Himself as the only One who could keep you from perishing?  Isaiah knew when he saw the LORD high and lifted up, sitting on a throne.  His response in Isaiah 6:3 is "Woe is me!  For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!"  The people of Israel came to the same realization, "Behold, we perish, we are undone, we are all undone." (Numbers 17:12)

Not only does God cause us to see our uncleanness, gives us life and fruitfulness, He also provides a unique role for each of us to fulfill.  "I give your priesthood as a gift." (Numbers 18:7)  As a believer, I, too, have been given the service of the priesthood.  1 Peter 2:5 says "you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ".  As a disciple of Christ Jesus, I am a member of a holy priesthood, like Aaron and his sons.  God gave me this role of service to Him as a gift, which He characterizes as "I am your portion and inheritance".  My responsibility is to offer spiritual sacrifices to God through Christ Jesus.

Abba Father, thank You for bringing Your children to the end of themselves.  You alone remove the veil with which Satan blinds us.  You alone bring us to the point of seeing our brokenness and justly deserved punishment.  Your love is unfathomable.  Lord Jesus, thank You for shining the light of Your Gospel into our heart, causing us to see You as our portion and inheritance.
